What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive, cancer-causing gas that cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that can enter the home through cracks, doorways, sump pumps, and other openings.
Why is Radon so dangerous?
Radon particles become trapped in the lungs and damage tissue. At high levels, breathing in radon gas can eventually cause lung cancer. The Surgeon General states that radon is the second leading cause of cancer in the US next to cigarette smoking.
It is estimated that radon gas causes between 15,000 and 22,000 deaths from lung cancer per year.
Where can Radon Gas be found?
Radon Gas can be found in any state, county, street, or home. There are, however, areas of greater risk than others. Those areas of high risk include the surrounding Baltimore area.
Radon gas is emitted from the earth and then enters the home through any available crack or crevice. It can easily build until unhealthy levels are reached. On average, radon has been found at dangerous levels in about 1 of every 15 homes!!

An EPA study measuring radon gas concentrations in Maryland in 1997 indicated that Maryland-wide of 84.114 tests, 34% exceeded 3.9 pCi/L.
Should I have MY house tested for elevated levels of Radon?
Yes! Without question, radon testing could be one of the most important things you do for your family’s health. Our tests are simple and affordable, with little inconvenience to the home owner. The EPA strongly recommends:
If you are buying a home or selling your home, have it tested for radon.
If you are buying a new home, ask if radon resistant construction features were used, and if the home has been tested.
Action if radon levels of 4 picoCuries per Liter (pCi/L) or higher are found.
Radon levels less than 4 pCi/L still could pose a health threat and, in many cases, still be corrected.
Take steps to prevent device interference when testing for radon
Don’t hesitate to have your home tested if you are afraid that a high radon level means the house cannot be inhabited. High levels of radon in your home CAN be corrected! There are contractors who can lower the levels of radon in your home for the same cost as many other home repairs.
